“You Hid (live)” by Toro y Moi

“In less than 3 hours, Toro y Moi recorded piano, drums, bass, guitar, rhodes, and vocals (in that order) for this live re-make of “You Hid,” tracking each instrument once and rarely asking to hear what was just recorded. Chaz couldn’t hide his excitement over being in a real recording studio. It leaked from his dimpled cheeks and poured from the tiny cracks in between his smiling teeth. Watching him build this song from scratch was like watching an architect re-sketch blueprints for a skyscraper from memory. It’s one of those sessions you warn yourself not to forget.”

It’s official. I have a really big crush on Chaz Bundick. So adorable.

It’s been months since I’ve heard of Memoryhouse, but it wasn’t until last weekend that I heard their tunes and it’s been nothing but on repeat for me.

The band is the collaboration of Denise (vocals) and Evan (instruments and production) who are from Ontario, British Columbia. Their band name is an ode to composer Max Richter’s album of the same name. They create beautiful, dreamy and ethereal songs that are perfect. The duo’s songs have a reflection of lo-fi, shoegaze, and classical.

The piano in “Lately” is borrowed from Jon Brion’s “Phone Call.” The song, “To the Lighthouse” is little bit more upbeat without losing the focus on simple, dreamy pop songs. Also, the MillionYoung remix of “To the Lighthouse” is definitely worth listening to.

They have yet to release an LP, but you can grab a copy of The Years EP, which was released in January. Their tumblr also contains a lot of other tracks, not appeared on their myspace, but I highly recommend taking a look (and listen, of course) at both.

A surprise gift for my lovelies @twinsistermusic. This lovingly crafted fan/friend-made video was made entirely of one clip from the Center for Home Movies called “Decomposed Carnival” found on Archive.org. This footage reminded me a lot of this song, so I thought, “why not?” Slapped ‘em together, and here you go. Enjoy.

We have been hearing a lot of talk about gingers lately since M.I.A.’s Born Free video debuted a few weeks ago. As myself being a redhead, what better way to show the interweb our minority’s accomplishments than displaying White Mystery’s talent. White Mystery is a brother/sister garage rock duo from Chicago. When I heard them for the first time, Alex White’s vocals reminded me of Grace Slick’s strong, soulful pipes (of Jefferson Airplane.) The group certainly defines themselves from other garage bands; they bring a raw, bone-shaking drum and guitar sound with unity. The song here is White Widow, the opener of their self-titled debut. It draws you in with its twang turned fuzz guitar sound and solid drumming. White Mystery’s Alex and Francis White know how to have fun, even as a twosome.

Hey everyone!

It’s Sandra here. I’ve been extremely busy lately so the site has been neglected and hasn’t had much updating with wonderful music posts and news. I feel bad about it but that will be changing pretty soon. There will be some more daily posts to read and more new music gems to listen to. When I started this music blog, I just thought I would try to run it myself, but with a busy work and school schedule, I’ve got a friend of mine, Julie to help me run this site. She’s got incredible music taste and seems to keep up with the new music releases and bands quicker than I can, so I have a feeling the site will be much more awesome with her joining me.

Thanks for everyone following and stay tuned for some new music!

“New Wave-sounding samples and ambient music is often interlaced with dance-y beats, and the approach to recording is decidedly lo-fi. Carles explained the genre this way in a post last summer: Chillwave, he wrote, ‘sounds like something playing in the background of an old VHS cassette that you found in your attic from the late ’80s/’90s.’”

Best Coast is the music project of Bethany Cosentino with the help of her friend Bob Bruno. She’s from Los Angles, CA. She went to college in New York City and began getting homesick for the warm, California weather. Like it’s been said above, she began the band just a few days after dropping out of college. She plays surf pop, garage rock music. It’s pretty rad. I’ve been playing every since I’ve heard the track, Sun Was High (So Was I) since last summer. You can listen to her tunes on her myspace.
